Alexander Mickelthwate is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant impact in the world of music. Born in Germany in 1970, Mickelthwate grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a conductor, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Mickelthwate showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Mickelthwate's family moved to Canada when he was six years old, and he continued his musical education there. He studied piano and violin and later attended the University of Manitoba, where he earned a degree in music. After completing his studies, Mickelthwate began his career as a conductor, working with various orchestras in Canada and the United States. One of the highlights of Mickelthwate's career was his appointment as the Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in 2005. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, earning critical acclaim for his innovative programming and dynamic conducting style. He also collaborated with renowned soloists and composers, including Philip Glass, John Adams, and James Ehnes. In addition to his work with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Mickelthwate has conducted many other orchestras around the world, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
