La Chapelle Royale Orchestra is a French classical music ensemble that was founded in 1977 by Philippe Herreweghe. The ensemble is known for its performances of Baroque and Classical music, particularly the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Philippe Herreweghe, a Belgian conductor and baritone, founded La Chapelle Royale Orchestra with the aim of performing early music with historically informed performance practices. The ensemble takes its name from the Chapelle Royale at the Palace of Versailles, where many of the works they perform were originally played. The ensemble's main members include a core group of instrumentalists and vocalists, many of whom have been with the ensemble since its founding. These include soprano Barbara Schlick, alto Gérard Lesne, tenor Howard Crook, and bass Peter Kooy. The instrumentalists include violinists François Fernandez and Marc Hantaï, cellist Christophe Coin, and harpsichordist Olivier Baumont. La Chapelle Royale Orchestra has performed at major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe and the United States, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Lincoln Center in New York City. The ensemble has also collaborated with other prominent musicians and ensembles, such as the Collegium Vocale Gent and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. One of the highlights of La Chapelle Royale Orchestra's career was their performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion at the 1985 Salzburg Festival. The performance was widely praised for its emotional intensity and historical accuracy, and it helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading interpreters of Baroque music. In addition to their live performances, La Chapelle Royale Orchestra has also recorded extensively. Their recordings of Bach's cantatas and Handel's oratorios have received critical acclaim, and they have won several awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. La Chapelle Royale Orchestra has also been recognized for their contributions to the field of early music. In 1990, they were awarded the Prix Antoine Livio by the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and in 2003, they received the Echo Klassik award for their recording of Bach's Mass in B Minor. Despite the ensemble's success, La Chapelle Royale Orchestra has remained committed to their original mission of performing early music with historical accuracy and emotional depth. Their performances continue to inspire audiences and musicians alike, and they remain one of the most respected and influential ensembles in the world of classical music.
