Paul Bender was born on May 15, 1985, in Vienna, Austria. He was born into a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Paul showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. As a child, Paul was enrolled in the Vienna Conservatory of Music, where he received formal training in classical piano. He quickly excelled in his studies and began performing in public at the age of six. By the time he was ten, Paul had already won several local and national piano competitions. In 1996, Paul's family moved to New York City, where he continued his music education at the Juilliard School. He studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Yoheved Kaplinsky. During his time at Juilliard, Paul continued to win numerous awards and competitions, including the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2001. After graduating from Juilliard in 2003, Paul began his professional career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation for his technical prowess and his ability to interpret complex musical compositions. He performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe, playing with some of the world's most renowned orchestras and conductors. One of Paul's most memorable performances was his debut at Carnegie Hall in 2005. He performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, also known as the "Emperor" concerto, with the New York Philharmonic. The performance was met with critical acclaim, and Paul was praised for his "virtuosic playing" and "sensitive interpretation" of the piece. In addition to his solo performances, Paul also collaborated with other musicians and ensembles. He frequently performed chamber music with his mother, who was a member of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. He also worked with contemporary composers, premiering several new works for piano and orchestra. Throughout his career, Paul received numerous awards and accolades for his musical achievements. In addition to his win at the Van Cliburn Competition, he was also a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Gilmore Artist Award. He was also inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 2012. Despite his success, Paul remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to practice for several hours each day, always striving to improve his technique and interpretation. He also remained committed to music education, frequently giving masterclasses and workshops to young musicians. Tragically, Paul's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2015. He underwent several rounds of treatment, but ultimately succumbed to the disease in 2017 at the age of 32. Paul's legacy as a musician and performer lives on through his recordings and the memories of those who were fortunate enough to hear him play. He will always be remembered as a virtuoso pianist and a true ambassador of classical music.
