Peter Lang was born on August 1, 1949, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He grew up in a musical family, with his father playing the guitar and his mother playing the piano. Lang started playing the guitar at the age of 14 and quickly became passionate about music. In the late 1960s, Lang moved to Boston to attend college. He became involved in the local music scene and started playing in coffeehouses and clubs. He was heavily influenced by the blues and folk music of the time, as well as the fingerstyle guitar playing of artists like John Fahey and Leo Kottke. In 1973, Lang released his debut album, "The Thing at the Nursery Room Window," on the Takoma label. The album was well-received and showcased Lang's unique fingerstyle guitar playing. He continued to release albums throughout the 1970s, including "Back to the Wall" and "Prime Cuts." Lang's music was characterized by his intricate fingerpicking style and his ability to blend different genres of music, including blues, folk, and jazz. He was also known for his use of alternate tunings, which gave his music a distinctive sound. In 1979, Lang was invited to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. The festival was a major milestone in his career and helped to introduce his music to a wider audience. He continued to tour extensively throughout the 1980s, playing at festivals and venues across the United States and Europe. In 1987, Lang released "Dharma Blues," which was a departure from his earlier work. The album featured Lang's interpretations of traditional blues songs, as well as original compositions that were heavily influenced by Eastern philosophy and spirituality. Throughout his career, Lang received critical acclaim for his music. He was praised for his technical skill and his ability to create complex arrangements that were still accessible to listeners. He was also recognized for his contributions to the fingerstyle guitar genre, which he helped to popularize in the 1970s and 1980s. In addition to his music career, Lang was also a respected guitar teacher. He taught at the Guitar Institute of Technology in Los Angeles and wrote instructional books and articles on fingerstyle guitar playing. Lang continued to perform and record music throughout the 1990s and 2000s. He released several albums, including "Dharma Blues Revisited" and "Testimony," which featured collaborations with other musicians. In 2010, Lang was diagnosed with cancer and underwent treatment. Despite his illness, he continued to perform and record music. He released his final album, "Signs of Life," in 2014. Peter Lang passed away on July 25, 2017, at the age of 67. He was remembered as a talented musician and a pioneer of the fingerstyle guitar genre. His music continues to inspire and influence guitarists around the world.
