The Queen's Six is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2008. The group is made up of six male singers who are all members of the choir of St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, where they perform regularly for the British royal family. The ensemble's repertoire includes a wide range of music, from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works, and they are known for their tight harmonies and dynamic performances. The Queen's Six was founded by Dr. David Skinner, who was then the director of music at St. George's Chapel. Dr. Skinner had the idea to create a small ensemble of singers from the chapel choir who could perform together outside of their regular duties at the chapel. He selected six of the most talented and versatile singers from the choir to form the group, and they began rehearsing together in their spare time. The original members of The Queen's Six were Timothy Carleston (countertenor), Nicholas Madden (countertenor), Dominic Bland (tenor), Andrew Thompson (tenor), Simon Whiteley (baritone), and Daniel Brittain (bass). All six singers had extensive experience performing in choirs and ensembles before joining The Queen's Six, and they quickly developed a strong rapport as a group. The ensemble's first major performance was at the Windsor Festival in 2009, where they received rave reviews for their performance of works by William Byrd and Thomas Tallis. This performance helped to establish The Queen's Six as a serious ensemble in the world of early music, and they began to receive invitations to perform at other festivals and venues around the UK. One of the highlights of The Queen's Six's early career was their performance at the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The group performed a program of Renaissance and contemporary music, including works by John Tavener and Arvo Pärt, and received standing ovations from the audience. This performance helped to raise the group's profile outside of the UK, and they began to receive invitations to perform at international festivals and venues. Since then, The Queen's Six has performed at some of the most prestigious venues and festivals in the world, including the Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Mexico. They have also released several critically acclaimed recordings, including their debut album, Music of the Realm, which features works by English composers from the Tudor and Stuart periods. In addition to their performances and recordings, The Queen's Six has also received numerous awards and accolades for their work. In 2012, they were awarded the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society's Young Artists Award, which recognizes outstanding young musicians in the UK. They were also named Ensemble of the Year at the 2018 Gramophone Classical Music Awards, one of the most prestigious awards in the classical music industry. The current members of The Queen's Six are Daniel Brittain (countertenor), Timothy Carleston (countertenor), Nicholas Madden (tenor), Dominic Bland (tenor), Andrew Thompson (baritone), and Simon Whiteley (bass). All six singers are still members of the choir of St. George's Chapel, and they continue to perform regularly for the British royal family. Despite their success and international acclaim, The Queen's Six remains committed to their roots as a small ensemble of singers from a chapel choir.More....
