Extension Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2010 in New York City. The ensemble is known for its innovative programming and its commitment to bringing classical music to new audiences. The founding members of Extension Ensemble were a group of young musicians who had recently graduated from some of the top music schools in the country. They were all passionate about classical music and wanted to find a way to share their love of the genre with a wider audience. The ensemble's main members include violinists Alex Fortes and Yuki Numata Resnick, violist Hannah Levinson, cellist John Popham, and pianist Isabelle O'Connell. Over the years, the ensemble has also collaborated with a number of guest artists, including composers, conductors, and soloists. One of the highlights of Extension Ensemble's early years was their performance at the 2011 Bang on a Can Marathon, a 12-hour music festival that showcases a wide range of contemporary classical music. The ensemble performed a piece by composer David Lang, which was well-received by the audience and helped to establish the group's reputation as an up-and-coming ensemble to watch. In 2012, Extension Ensemble released their debut album, "New York City," which featured works by a number of contemporary composers, including Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, and Judd Greenstein. The album received critical acclaim and helped to further establish the ensemble's reputation as a leading interpreter of contemporary classical music. Over the years, Extension Ensemble has performed at a number of prestigious venues and festivals, including the Lincoln Center Festival, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the Ecstatic Music Festival.
