Lew Brown was a prominent American composer and lyricist who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on December 10, 1893, in Odessa, Ukraine, Brown immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of six. He grew up in New York City and showed an early interest in music, learning to play the piano and violin at a young age. Brown's musical talent was recognized early on, and he began his career as a songwriter in the 1910s. He collaborated with a number of other composers and lyricists, including Ray Henderson, Buddy DeSylva, and Al Jolson. Together, they wrote a number of popular songs that became hits in the 1920s and 1930s. One of Brown's most famous compositions was the song "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries," which he wrote with Henderson in 1931. The song became a huge hit and has since been covered by numerous artists, including Judy Garland and Doris Day. Brown also wrote the lyrics for the song "Button Up Your Overcoat," which was featured in the Broadway musical "Follow Thru" in 1929. In addition to his work as a songwriter, Brown also composed music for a number of films and Broadway shows. He wrote the score for the 1933 film "42nd Street," which became a classic of the musical genre. He also composed the music for the Broadway musical "Hold Everything" in 1928, which featured the hit song "You're the Cream in My Coffee." Brown's career spanned several decades, and he continued to write music and lyrics until his death in 1958. His contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized by numerous awards and honors, including induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970. Despite his success as a composer and lyricist, Brown's personal life was marked by tragedy. He was married twice, and both of his wives died at a young age. His first wife, Dorothy, died in 1935 at the age of 34, and his second wife, Jeanne, died in 1955 at the age of 47. Brown himself died just three years later, at the age of 64. Despite the challenges he faced in his personal life, Brown's contributions to the world of classical music continue to be celebrated today. His songs and compositions have become classics of the genre, and his legacy as a composer and lyricist lives on.
