Albert Von Tilzer was a prominent American composer of popular music during the early 20th century. He was born on March 29, 1878, in Indianapolis, Indiana, as Albert Gumm. His parents were German immigrants who owned a saloon and a grocery store. Albert grew up in a musical family, and his father played the piano and the violin. He started playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. In 1893, Albert and his brother Harry moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. They changed their last name to Von Tilzer, which sounded more German and sophisticated. Albert started working as a staff pianist for a music publisher and began composing his own songs. His first hit song was "My Old New Hampshire Home," which he wrote in 1898. The song became popular and was performed by many vaudeville acts. In 1900, Albert formed his own music publishing company, the York Music Company, with his brother Harry. The company became successful and published many of Albert's songs, as well as songs by other composers. Albert continued to write hit songs, including "A Bird in a Gilded Cage" (1900), "Wait Till the Sun Shines, Nellie" (1905), and "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" (1908). "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" became one of the most popular and enduring sports songs in American culture. Albert also wrote music for Broadway shows and films. He composed the music for the Broadway musicals "The Whirl of Society" (1907) and "The Echo" (1910). He also wrote the music for the silent films "The Jolly Jester" (1917) and "The Heart of Wetona" (1919). In addition to his popular music, Albert also composed classical music. He wrote a symphony, a string quartet, and a piano concerto. His classical music was well-received by critics, but it did not achieve the same level of popularity as his popular music. Albert continued to write music throughout his life and remained active in the music industry. He died on October 1, 1956, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 78. He was survived by his wife and two children. Albert Von Tilzer was a prolific and influential composer of popular music during the early 20th century.
