Emily D'Angelo is a Canadian mezzo-soprano who has quickly established herself as one of the most promising young artists in the classical music world. Born in Toronto in 1994, D'Angelo grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. She attended the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music, where she studied with renowned mezzo-soprano Wendy Nielsen. D'Angelo's talent was quickly recognized, and she began to make a name for herself in the Canadian opera scene. In 2015, she won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, which led to her being invited to participate in the Met's Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. This was a major turning point in D'Angelo's career, as it gave her the opportunity to work with some of the most respected artists in the industry and to perform on one of the world's most prestigious stages. Since then, D'Angelo has gone on to perform in some of the most important opera houses in the world, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Paris Opera, and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. She has also appeared in numerous festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Glyndebourne Festival. One of D'Angelo's most notable performances came in 2018, when she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. She played the role of Zerlina in Mozart's "Don Giovanni," and her performance was widely praised by critics. The New York Times called her "a standout" and praised her "rich, warm voice and natural stage presence." D'Angelo has also received numerous awards and accolades for her work. In 2018, she won the prestigious George London Foundation Award, which is given to young singers who show exceptional promise in the opera world. She has also been a finalist in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition and has won the Marilyn Horne Song Competition. Despite her success, D'Angelo remains humble and focused on her craft. She has said in interviews that she is constantly striving to improve and to learn from the artists around her. She is also passionate about using her platform to promote diversity and inclusivity in the classical music world. In addition to her opera work, D'Angelo is also an accomplished recitalist and has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Wigmore Hall. She has a particular affinity for the music of Franz Schubert and has recorded an album of his songs with pianist Sholto Kynoch. As D'Angelo continues to grow and evolve as an artist, it is clear that she is one of the most exciting voices in the classical music world today. Her talent, dedication, and passion for her craft have already earned her a place among the greats, and it is clear that she has a bright future ahead of her.
