The Gstaad Festival Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2004 by the Swiss conductor and pianist, Christoph Eschenbach. The orchestra is based in the picturesque Swiss village of Gstaad, which is located in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. The ensemble is made up of some of the most talented young musicians from around the world, who come together each summer to perform a series of concerts as part of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival. The Gstaad Menuhin Festival was founded in 1957 by the legendary violinist, Yehudi Menuhin, who was a frequent visitor to Gstaad and fell in love with the village's natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. The festival quickly became one of the most prestigious classical music events in Europe, attracting some of the world's most renowned musicians and orchestras. In 2004, Christoph Eschenbach was appointed as the festival's artistic director, and he decided to create a new orchestra that would be dedicated to performing the works of the great composers of the classical and romantic eras. The Gstaad Festival Orchestra is made up of around 80 musicians, who are selected through a rigorous audition process. The ensemble is known for its youthful energy and enthusiasm, as well as its technical excellence and musical sensitivity. Many of the orchestra's members are graduates of some of the world's most prestigious music schools, such as the Juilliard School in New York, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Conservatoire de Paris. One of the highlights of the Gstaad Festival Orchestra's early years was its performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 2005, which was conducted by Christoph Eschenbach himself. The concert was a huge success, and the orchestra received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Since then, the ensemble has gone on to perform a wide range of classical and romantic works, including symphonies by Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, and Brahms, as well as concertos by Beethoven, Chopin, and Tchaikovsky. In addition to its regular performances at the Gstaad Menuhin Festival, the Gstaad Festival Orchestra has also toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia. The ensemble has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Suntory Hall in Tokyo. The orchestra has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned soloists, such as the pianist Lang Lang, the violinist Maxim Vengerov, and the cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the most memorable performances in the Gstaad Festival Orchestra's history was its concert at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China. The orchestra performed a program of classical and traditional Chinese music, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. The concert was a huge success, and the orchestra received a standing ovation from the audience. Over the years, the Gstaad Festival Orchestra has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances. In 2008, the ensemble was awarded the Prix de la Fondation Vaudoise pour la Culture, which is one of the most prestigious cultural awards in Switzerland. The following year, the orchestra was named "Orchestra of the Year" by the Swiss music magazine, Schweizer Musikzeitung. In 2012, the ensemble was awarded the Echo Klassik Award for its recording of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, which was conducted by Christoph Eschenbach.
