Alex Garrobé is a renowned classical guitarist from Spain, known for his virtuosic performances and innovative interpretations of classical music. Born in Barcelona in 1975, Garrobé began playing the guitar at the age of six, under the guidance of his father, who was also a guitarist. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument, and began performing publicly at the age of nine. Garrobé's early musical education was heavily influenced by the Spanish classical guitar tradition, particularly the works of Francisco Tárrega and Andrés Segovia. He studied at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona, where he received a degree in guitar performance. He also studied with renowned guitarists such as David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, and Pepe Romero. Garrobé's career as a professional musician began in the late 1990s, when he won several international guitar competitions, including the Francisco Tárrega International Guitar Competition in 1997 and the Andrés Segovia International Guitar Competition in 1998. These victories brought him international recognition and led to performances in major concert halls around the world. One of Garrobé's most notable performances was his debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2001. He performed a program of Spanish classical guitar music, including works by Tárrega, Joaquín Rodrigo, and Isaac Albéniz. The performance was widely praised by critics, who noted Garrobé's technical skill and emotional depth. Garrobé has also collaborated with many other musicians and ensembles throughout his career. He has performed with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the Orquesta de Córdoba, and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León, among others. He has also worked with contemporary composers, such as Leo Brouwer and Roberto Gerhard, to premiere new works for the guitar. In addition to his performances, Garrobé is also a respected teacher and mentor to young guitarists. He has taught at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu and the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, and has given masterclasses and workshops around the world. He is known for his patient and supportive teaching style, and for his ability to inspire his students to reach their full potential. Garrobé has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In addition to his competition victories, he has been awarded the Medal of Honor from the City of Barcelona, the National Prize for Culture from the Government of Catalonia, and the Medal of Honor from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. He has also been recognized for his contributions to the promotion of Spanish classical guitar music around the world. Today, Garrobé continues to perform and teach, and is considered one of the leading classical guitarists of his generation. His recordings, which include works by Tárrega, Rodrigo, Albéniz, and others, have received critical acclaim and are widely regarded as some of the best interpretations of Spanish classical guitar music. He remains committed to preserving and promoting the rich tradition of Spanish classical guitar music, while also exploring new directions and pushing the boundaries of the instrument.
