Gianna D'Angelo was a renowned American soprano who made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. She was born on September 13, 1929, in Los Angeles, California, to Italian immigrant parents. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a singer, which influenced her love for music from a young age. D'Angelo began her musical training at the age of six, studying piano and voice. She later attended the University of Southern California, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1951. She continued her studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied with the renowned soprano, Lotte Lehmann. D'Angelo made her professional debut in 1952, performing the role of Barbarina in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" with the San Francisco Opera. She quickly gained recognition for her exceptional vocal abilities and was soon invited to perform with some of the most prestigious opera companies in the world. One of D'Angelo's most notable performances was in 1955, when she sang the role of Zerlina in Mozart's "Don Giovanni" at the Salzburg Festival in Austria. Her performance was widely praised, and she was hailed as one of the most promising young sopranos of her generation. D'Angelo went on to perform with many other renowned opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan. She was particularly known for her performances in Mozart's operas, but she also excelled in other repertoire, including works by Verdi, Puccini, and Richard Strauss. Throughout her career, D'Angelo received numerous awards and accolades for her exceptional performances. In 1957, she was awarded the prestigious Richard Tucker Award, which is given annually to an outstanding American opera singer. She was also awarded the San Francisco Opera Medal in 1979, in recognition of her contributions to the company. D'Angelo retired from performing in 1982, but she continued to be involved in the world of opera as a teacher and mentor. She taught at the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles, and she also served as a judge for many vocal competitions. D'Angelo passed away on December 15, 2013, at the age of 84. She left behind a legacy as one of the most talented and respected sopranos of her generation, and her contributions to the world of classical music will be remembered for many years to come.
