Born on May 29, 1985, in New York City, Shannon grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a jazz pianist, and her mother was a classical violinist. Shannon's parents recognized her musical talent at a young age and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Shannon began her music education at the age of five, learning to play the piano. She quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and began performing in public at the age of seven. Shannon's parents also encouraged her to learn other instruments, including the violin and cello. By the time she was ten years old, Shannon was proficient in all three instruments. At the age of twelve, Shannon was accepted into the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division, where she studied piano under the tutelage of renowned pianist, Yoheved Kaplinsky. During her time at Juilliard, Shannon also studied violin and cello, and performed in numerous concerts and recitals. After completing her studies at Juilliard, Shannon attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she continued her piano studies under the guidance of renowned pianist, Gary Graffman. While at Curtis, Shannon also studied chamber music and performed in numerous chamber music concerts. In 2005, Shannon won first prize in the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which is held every four years in Fort Worth, Texas. The competition is one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world, and winning it is considered a significant achievement in the classical music world. Shannon's performance in the competition was praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth. Following her win at the Van Cliburn Competition, Shannon began performing extensively throughout the United States and Europe. She has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Shannon has also performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonic. In addition to her performances as a soloist, Shannon is also an accomplished chamber musician. She has performed with some of the world's leading chamber music ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet and the Guarneri String Quartet. Shannon is also a founding member of the Brown-Thomas Piano Duo, which has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Throughout her career, Shannon has received numerous awards and accolades for her performances. In addition to her win at the Van Cliburn Competition, she has also won first prize in the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition. Shannon has also been awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for a career in classical music. In addition to her performing career, Shannon is also a dedicated music educator.
