The Revels is a classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over 60 years. Founded in 1957 by John Langstaff, the group has become known for its unique blend of traditional music, dance, and storytelling. John Langstaff was a musician and educator who had a passion for traditional music and dance. He believed that these art forms were an important part of our cultural heritage and should be celebrated and shared with others. In 1957, he founded The Revels as a way to bring traditional music and dance to a wider audience. The early years of The Revels were focused on Christmas music and traditions. Langstaff wanted to create a show that would capture the spirit of the season and bring together people of all ages and backgrounds. The first Revels performance was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1957 and was an instant success. Over the years, The Revels has grown and evolved, but its commitment to traditional music and dance has remained constant. The group has performed all over the world, from small community theaters to major concert halls. Some of their most notable performances include appearances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Lincoln Center in New York City. The members of The Revels are a diverse group of musicians, dancers, and actors who come from all walks of life. Many of them have been with the group for years, and their dedication and passion for traditional music and dance is evident in every performance. One of the highlights of The Revels' career was their performance at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 1982. This festival is one of the largest celebrations of traditional music and dance in the world, and The Revels were honored to be a part of it. Their performance was a huge success, and they received rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. In addition to their performances, The Revels have also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2003, they were awarded the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a traditional artist in the United States. They have also been recognized by the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the New England Foundation for the Arts. Despite their many accomplishments, The Revels remain committed to their mission of celebrating traditional music and dance. They continue to perform all over the world, and their shows are always a joyous celebration of our cultural heritage.
