He was the son of a music teacher, and his love for music was instilled in him from a young age. Artysz began his musical journey by studying piano and singing in the choir of his local church. He later went on to study at the State Higher School of Music in Poznań, where he received his diploma in 1961. Artysz's career as a professional singer began in 1962 when he made his debut at the Grand Theatre in Poznań, where he performed the role of Silvio in Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci." He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and his ability to convey emotion through his performances. In 1964, he won first prize at the International Vocal Competition in Toulouse, France, which marked the beginning of his international career. Throughout his career, Artysz performed in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and La Scala in Milan. He was known for his powerful and expressive voice, which he used to bring to life some of the most iconic roles in opera, including Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, and Falstaff. One of Artysz's most notable performances was his portrayal of the title character in Verdi's "Falstaff" at the Royal Opera House in London in 1976. His performance was widely praised by critics, who described it as "brilliant" and "captivating." He also received critical acclaim for his performance in the title role of Mozart's "Don Giovanni" at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1980. Artysz was also a prolific recording artist, having recorded over 50 albums throughout his career. His recordings included works by some of the greatest composers in classical music, including Mozart, Verdi, and Puccini. He was particularly known for his recordings of Polish opera, including Moniuszko's "Halka" and "The Haunted Manor." In addition to his successful career as a performer, Artysz was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at the State Higher School of Music in Poznań, where he had studied, and later at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in opera and classical music. Artysz received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of Polonia Restituta, one of Poland's highest honors, which he received in 1997. He was also awarded the Medal for Merit to Culture by the Polish government in 2005. Sadly, Jerzy Artysz passed away on December 28, 2018, at the age of 81. However, his legacy as one of Poland's greatest baritone singers lives on.
