Born on December 22, 1961, in the city of Ghent, Belgium, Vanoosthuyse showed an early interest in music and began playing the clarinet at the age of nine. He received his first lessons from his father, who was a clarinetist himself. Vanoosthuyse's talent was quickly recognized, and he was accepted into the Royal Conservatory of Ghent at the age of 16. He studied under the guidance of Walter Boeykens, one of the most prominent clarinetists of the 20th century.
