She attended the Juilliard School for her undergraduate degree, where she studied with Carol Wincenc and Samuel Baron. Sopp then went on to earn her Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music, where she studied with Ransom Wilson. Sopp’s career as a professional flutist began while she was still a student at Juilliard. She was a founding member of the contemporary music ensemble, yMusic, which was formed in 2008. The group quickly gained recognition for their innovative approach to classical music, blending elements of pop, rock, and folk music into their performances. Sopp’s contributions to yMusic as a flutist and vocalist helped to establish the group as one of the most exciting and dynamic ensembles in the contemporary classical music scene. In addition to her work with yMusic, Sopp has also performed with a number of other prominent classical music groups. She has been a member of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) since 2009, and has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, and the American Symphony Orchestra, among others. Sopp has also collaborated with a number of notable composers, including Nico Muhly, Missy Mazzoli, and Andrew Norman. Sopp’s performances have been praised for their technical precision and emotional depth. She has been described as a “dazzling” and “virtuosic” flutist, with a “warm and expressive” tone. Her ability to convey a wide range of emotions through her playing has made her a sought-after performer and collaborator. In addition to her work as a performer, Sopp is also an accomplished educator. She has taught at a number of institutions, including the Yale School of Music, the Juilliard School, and the Manhattan School of Music. Sopp is known for her engaging and innovative teaching style, which emphasizes the importance of creativity and collaboration in music education. In 2011, she was a featured soloist with the New York Philharmonic, performing the world premiere of Nico Muhly’s “So Far, So Good.” The performance was widely praised, with The New York Times describing Sopp’s playing as “brilliant” and “mesmerizing.” Sopp has also been recognized for her work with yMusic. In 2016, the group was nominated for a Grammy Award for their album, “Balance Problems.” The album, which features compositions by a number of contemporary composers, showcases yMusic’s unique blend of classical and popular music styles. She was a finalist in the National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition in 2005, and was awarded the Yale School of Music’s Alumni Association Prize in 2007.
