Daniel Rosenboom is a renowned American trumpeter, composer, and bandleader who has made a significant impact on the classical music scene. Born on August 26, 1974, in Los Angeles, California, Rosenboom grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Richard Rosenboom, was a composer and music professor, while his mother, Susan Rosenboom, was a pianist and music teacher. From a young age, Rosenboom was exposed to a wide range of musical genres, including classical, jazz, rock, and world music. Rosenboom began playing the trumpet at the age of ten and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with several renowned trumpet teachers, including Roy Poper, Malcolm McNab, and Thomas Stevens. In 1992, Rosenboom enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) to pursue a degree in trumpet performance. While at CalArts, he studied with Wadada Leo Smith, a prominent jazz trumpeter and composer, who had a profound influence on Rosenboom's musical style and approach. After graduating from CalArts in 1996, Rosenboom began his professional career as a freelance trumpeter, performing with a variety of ensembles and orchestras in Los Angeles. He also started composing his own music, drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources, including classical, jazz, and experimental music. In 2003, Rosenboom formed his own ensemble, the Daniel Rosenboom Quintet, which featured some of the most talented young musicians in Los Angeles. Over the years, Rosenboom has become known for his innovative and genre-defying approach to music. He has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including jazz pianist Billy Childs, rock band System of a Down, and experimental composer John Zorn. He has also composed music for film, television, and dance productions, including the award-winning documentary "The Act of Killing." One of Rosenboom's most significant achievements was his 2013 album "Book of Omens," which was released on Orenda Records. The album featured Rosenboom's quintet, as well as a string quartet and a choir, and showcased his unique blend of classical, jazz, and experimental music. "Book of Omens" received critical acclaim and was named one of the best jazz albums of the year by several publications. In addition to his work as a performer and composer, Rosenboom is also a dedicated music educator. He has taught at several universities and music schools, including the California Institute of the Arts, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Colburn School. He has also conducted masterclasses and workshops around the world, sharing his knowledge and expertise with aspiring musicians. Throughout his career, Rosenboom has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the classical music world. In 2010, he was awarded a grant from the American Composers Forum to support the creation of new music. In 2012, he was named a finalist for the ASCAP Foundation's Young Jazz Composer Award. In 2014, he was awarded a grant from the Aaron Copland Fund for Music to support the recording and release of his album "Fire Keeper." Today, Rosenboom continues to push the boundaries of classical music, exploring new sounds and styles and collaborating with a diverse range of artists. He remains a passionate advocate for music education and a dedicated mentor to young musicians.
