He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known violinist. Armand showed an interest in music from a young age and began playing the violin at the age of six. Armand's family moved to Paris when he was ten years old, and he continued his music education there. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. Armand's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly gained recognition as a prodigy. Armand's career as a professional musician began in the 1960s when he joined the Orchestre de Paris as a violinist. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the orchestra's concertmaster in 1970. Armand's skill as a violinist was widely recognized, and he was invited to perform as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras. One of Armand's most memorable performances was his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1972. He performed the Brahms Violin Concerto, and his performance was met with critical acclaim. Armand's career continued to flourish, and he went on to perform with many other leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic. Armand was also a prolific recording artist, and he recorded many of the great works of the classical repertoire. His recordings of the Beethoven Violin Concerto and the Brahms Violin Concerto are considered to be among the best ever made. In addition to his work as a performer, Armand was also a respected teacher. He taught at the Conservatoire de Paris and the Juilliard School, and many of his students went on to have successful careers as musicians. He was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1982, and he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1995.
