Robert Künzli was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1955, in Zurich, Switzerland. He was the son of a Swiss father and a German mother, both of whom were passionate about music. Künzli's father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, so it was no surprise that he developed an interest in music at a young age. Künzli began his musical education at the Zurich Conservatory, where he studied piano and composition. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received a Master of Music degree in piano performance. During his time at Juilliard, Künzli studied with some of the most renowned pianists of the time, including Rosina Lhévinne and György Sándor. After completing his studies, Künzli embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist. He made his debut in 1980 at the Zurich Tonhalle, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and Künzli quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. Over the course of his career, Künzli performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. He also collaborated with many of the world's most renowned conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, and Herbert von Karajan. One of Künzli's most memorable performances was his 1985 performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. In addition to his performances as a soloist, Künzli was also an accomplished chamber musician. He frequently performed with his wife, the violinist Miriam Fried, and together they recorded several critically acclaimed albums. Throughout his career, Künzli received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1986, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1999 for his contributions to German culture. Despite his success, Künzli remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his unwavering commitment to excellence. He continued to perform and record until his untimely death in 2006 at the age of 51.
