Flexible Music is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2005 by a group of talented musicians who shared a passion for exploring the boundaries of classical music. The ensemble is known for its innovative approach to classical music, which combines traditional classical music with contemporary styles and techniques. The founding members of Flexible Music were violinist Jennifer Choi, cellist Wendy Law, and pianist Kathleen Supové. All three musicians were accomplished performers in their own right, with extensive experience playing in orchestras and chamber ensembles. However, they were drawn together by a shared desire to create something new and exciting in the world of classical music. From the beginning, Flexible Music set out to challenge the conventions of classical music performance. Rather than simply playing the standard repertoire of classical music, the ensemble sought to incorporate elements of contemporary music, jazz, and other genres into their performances. They also experimented with different performance formats, such as incorporating multimedia elements into their concerts. One of the highlights of Flexible Music's early career was their performance at the Bang on a Can Marathon in 2006. This annual music festival, which takes place in New York City, is known for showcasing innovative and experimental music. Flexible Music's performance at the festival was well-received, and helped to establish the ensemble as a rising star in the world of contemporary classical music. Over the years, Flexible Music has continued to push the boundaries of classical music performance. The ensemble has collaborated with a wide range of composers and performers, including jazz pianist Vijay Iyer, composer and performer Meredith Monk, and the Kronos Quartet. They have also performed at a variety of prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. One of the most notable performances in Flexible Music's history was their 2010 concert at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The concert, titled "The Voice of Anne Frank," was a multimedia performance that combined music, video, and spoken word to tell the story of Anne Frank's life and legacy. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and helped to cement Flexible Music's reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting ensembles in the world of classical music. In addition to their performances, Flexible Music has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2008, the ensemble was awarded a grant from the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, which helped to support their ongoing work. They have also been featured in a variety of media outlets, including The New York Times, NPR, and WNYC. Today, Flexible Music continues to push the boundaries of classical music performance. The ensemble's current members include Jennifer Choi on violin, Ashley Bathgate on cello, and Kathleen Supové on piano. Together, they continue to explore new and innovative ways to bring classical music to audiences around the world.
