From the beginning, Nikel Ensemble set out to explore new and unconventional ways of making music. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by contemporary composers such as Helmut Lachenmann, Rebecca Saunders, and Georges Aperghis, as well as pieces by lesser-known composers and original compositions by the members of the ensemble. One of the highlights of Nikel Ensemble's early career was their performance at the 2009 Donaueschingen Festival, one of the most important contemporary music festivals in Europe. The ensemble's performance of Helmut Lachenmann's "Grido" was widely praised for its technical virtuosity and emotional intensity. Since then, Nikel Ensemble has performed at many other prestigious festivals and venues around the world, including the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music, and the Venice Biennale. The ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of other musicians and artists, including the Arditti Quartet, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, and the visual artist Olafur Eliasson. In addition to their live performances, Nikel Ensemble has also released several critically acclaimed recordings. Their debut album, "Nikel," was released in 2011 and features works by Helmut Lachenmann, Georges Aperghis, and Chaya Czernowin. In 2010, the ensemble was awarded the Kranichstein Music Prize at the Darmstadt International Summer Course for New Music, one of the most prestigious awards in the field of contemporary music.
