Artist Info
Role:ComposerBirth:1957Genre:Avant-GardeChamberChaya Czernowin is a contemporary classical music composer who was born on December 7, 1957, in Haifa, Israel. She grew up in a musical family, with her father being a composer and her mother a pianist. Czernowin began playing the piano at a young age and later studied composition at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem. After completing her studies, Czernowin moved to Germany to continue her education at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. She also spent time studying with renowned composers such as Brian Ferneyhough and Luigi Nono. During this time, Czernowin began to develop her unique style, which often incorporates extended techniques and unconventional sounds. Czernowin's early works include pieces such as "Shu Hai Practices Javelin" and "Ina," which were both composed in the 1980s. These works showcase her interest in exploring the limits of traditional instruments and experimenting with new sounds. In "Shu Hai Practices Javelin," for example, Czernowin uses a technique called "multiphonics" to create a complex, layered sound on the clarinet. In the 1990s, Czernowin began to gain international recognition for her work. She was awarded the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis in 1992 and the Fromm Foundation Commission in 1994. During this time, she also began to incorporate electronic elements into her compositions, such as in "Afatsim" and "Zohar Iver." One of Czernowin's most well-known works is "Pnima...ins Innere," which was composed in 2000. The piece is a multimedia opera that explores themes of memory and identity. It features a libretto by the Israeli poet and playwright Yael Lotan and incorporates video projections and electronic sounds. "Pnima" has been performed in numerous countries and has received critical acclaim for its innovative approach to opera. Czernowin's more recent works include "Adiantum Capillus-Veneris" and "The Quiet," both of which were composed in 2019. "Adiantum Capillus-Veneris" is a piece for solo cello that explores the relationship between sound and silence. "The Quiet" is a chamber opera that tells the story of a woman who is trapped in a room with no memory of how she got there. Throughout her career, Czernowin has been recognized for her contributions to contemporary classical music. She has received numerous awards and commissions, including the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 2017. She has also held teaching positions at institutions such as the University of California, San Diego and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Czernowin's work is characterized by its exploration of unconventional sounds and techniques. She often incorporates electronic elements into her compositions and is known for her use of extended techniques on traditional instruments. Her music is challenging and thought-provoking, and she is considered one of the most important contemporary classical composers working today.More....
