Johannes de Lymburgia was a prominent composer of the late medieval period, born in the city of Limburg in the Netherlands in the early 15th century. Little is known about his early life, but it is believed that he received his musical education in the nearby city of Utrecht, which was a center of musical activity at the time. Lymburgia's career as a composer began in the 1430s, when he was appointed as a singer and composer at the court of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. This was a prestigious position, as the Burgundian court was one of the most important centers of musical patronage in Europe at the time. Lymburgia's duties at the court included composing music for religious services, as well as secular music for courtly entertainments. Lymburgia's music is characterized by its rich harmonies and complex polyphony, which was typical of the music of the late medieval period. His compositions include both sacred and secular works, and he was particularly known for his motets, which were complex choral works that often featured multiple voices singing different texts simultaneously. One of Lymburgia's most famous works is his motet "O Maria, Deu ma mere", which was composed in honor of the Virgin Mary. The piece is also notable for its use of a cantus firmus, which is a pre-existing melody that is used as the basis for a new composition.
