Charlotte Rae was a renowned classical music artist who was born on April 22, 1926, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants Esther Ottenstein and Meyer Lubotsky. Her father was a retail tire business owner, and her mother was a homemaker. Rae grew up in a musical family, and her parents encouraged her to pursue music from a young age. Rae began her music education at the Milwaukee Music Institute, where she studied piano and voice. She later attended Northwestern University, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1948. After graduation, Rae moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. In New York, Rae studied with renowned vocal coach William Herman and made her debut at the Town Hall in 1951. She quickly gained recognition for her powerful soprano voice and her ability to interpret a wide range of musical styles. Rae's performances were praised for their emotional depth and technical precision. Throughout her career, Rae performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras and opera companies in the world. She made her debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1953 and went on to perform with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra, among others. Rae was also a regular performer at the Metropolitan Opera, where she made her debut in 1956 as the Queen of the Night in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." She went on to perform in numerous productions at the Met, including "Don Giovanni," "The Marriage of Figaro," and "La Traviata." In addition to her work in opera, Rae was also a prolific recitalist. She performed in venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Sydney Opera House. Rae was known for her ability to connect with audiences and bring a sense of intimacy to her performances. Throughout her career, Rae received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to classical music. In 1960, she was awarded the prestigious Richard Tucker Award, which recognizes outstanding young American opera singers. She was also a recipient of the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor given to artists by the United States government. Rae was known not only for her musical talent but also for her dedication to teaching and mentoring young musicians. She served as a faculty member at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music and was a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conservatories around the world. In addition to her work in music, Rae was also an advocate for social justice and civil rights. She was a supporter of the NAACP and participated in numerous protests and demonstrations throughout her life. Rae continued to perform and teach well into her 80s, and her legacy as a musician and educator continues to inspire generations of musicians. She passed away on August 5, 2018, at the age of 92, leaving behind a rich legacy of musical excellence and social activism.
