In 1935, Pietro's family moved to Milan, where he continued his musical education at the Conservatory of Milan. He studied under some of the most renowned piano teachers of the time, including Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli and Carlo Zecchi. Pietro's talent and dedication to his craft were evident, and he quickly became one of the most promising young pianists in Italy. In 1942, Pietro won first prize in the prestigious Busoni Piano Competition, which was held in Bolzano, Italy.
