The Ebor Singers is a classical music ensemble based in York, England. The group was founded in 1983 by Paul Gameson, a choral conductor and musicologist who had recently moved to the city. The name "Ebor" is derived from the Latin name for York, Eboracum. The early years of the Ebor Singers were focused on building a repertoire of sacred choral music, particularly from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The group quickly gained a reputation for their precise and expressive performances, and began to attract attention from audiences and critics alike. One of the Ebor Singers' early highlights was their performance of Thomas Tallis' Spem in alium, a 40-part motet that is considered one of the greatest works of the English Renaissance. The group's rendition of the piece was praised for its clarity and balance, and helped to establish the Ebor Singers as one of the leading choral ensembles in the region. Over the years, the Ebor Singers have continued to expand their repertoire, incorporating works from a wide range of musical periods and styles. They have collaborated with a number of prominent composers, including John Tavener, Judith Weir, and James MacMillan, and have premiered several new works written specifically for the group. In addition to their work in the concert hall, the Ebor Singers have also been active in the recording studio. They have released several albums on the Delphian label, including a critically acclaimed recording of William Byrd's Mass for Four Voices. One of the Ebor Singers' most notable achievements came in 2013, when they were invited to perform at the BBC Proms, one of the world's most prestigious classical music festivals. The group's performance of works by Tallis, Byrd, and others was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and was met with widespread acclaim. In recent years, the Ebor Singers have continued to build on their reputation as one of the UK's leading choral ensembles. They have performed at a number of major festivals and venues, including the York Early Music Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and St John's Smith Square in London. The Ebor Singers have also been recognized with several awards and honors over the years. In 2015, they were awarded the York Culture Award for Excellence in the Arts, and in 2017 they were named Ensemble of the Year at the York Culture Awards. Despite their many achievements, the Ebor Singers remain committed to their mission of bringing the beauty and power of choral music to audiences around the world. Through their performances, recordings, and educational outreach programs, they continue to inspire and delight audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
