Ensemble Mediolanum is a classical music group that was founded in 2001 in Milan, Italy. The group is made up of six musicians who specialize in playing early music on period instruments. The members of the group are Marco Ferrari (recorder), Marco Lazzara (violin), Marco Bianchi (viola da gamba), Giuseppe Naviglio (harpsichord), Fabio Tricomi (theorbo), and Marco Vincenzi (percussion). The group's name, Mediolanum, is the Latin name for Milan, which was an important center of music and culture during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The name reflects the group's commitment to performing music from these periods with authenticity and historical accuracy. Ensemble Mediolanum's repertoire includes music from the 16th to the 18th centuries, with a particular focus on Italian and French composers. The group's performances are characterized by their virtuosity, precision, and sensitivity to the nuances of the music. One of the highlights of Ensemble Mediolanum's career was their performance at the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, the Netherlands, in 2005. The festival is one of the most prestigious early music festivals in the world, and the group's performance was widely praised for its technical excellence and musicality. In 2007, Ensemble Mediolanum released their debut album, "La Folia," which featured music by Italian and Spanish composers from the 17th and 18th centuries. The album received critical acclaim and was nominated for a Diapason d'Or, one of the most prestigious awards in the classical music industry. Since then, Ensemble Mediolanum has released several more albums, including "Les Plaisirs du Louvre" (2010), which featured music from the French Baroque period, and "Il Canto della Sirena" (2014), which focused on Italian music from the 16th century. In addition to their recordings, Ensemble Mediolanum has performed at major music festivals and concert halls throughout Europe, including the Festival de Musique Baroque de Versailles, the Festival de Sablé, and the Wigmore Hall in London. Ensemble Mediolanum's commitment to historical accuracy and authenticity has also led them to collaborate with scholars and musicologists to research and perform music that has been largely forgotten or neglected. In 2017, the group released an album of music by the Italian composer Giovanni Battista Fontana, whose music had not been performed in over 400 years. Ensemble Mediolanum's dedication to early music and their virtuosic performances have earned them a reputation as one of the leading ensembles in the field. Their recordings and performances have been praised for their technical excellence, musicality, and historical accuracy, and they continue to inspire audiences and musicians alike with their passion for early music.
