The Amsterdam Vivaldi Players is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1987 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The ensemble is known for its performances of Baroque music, particularly the works of Antonio Vivaldi. The founding members of the Amsterdam Vivaldi Players were violinist Remy Baudet and harpsichordist Pieter-Jan Belder. Both musicians had a passion for Baroque music and wanted to create an ensemble that would specialize in this genre. They were soon joined by other musicians who shared their vision, including cellist Jaap ter Linden and flutist Wilbert Hazelzet. The Amsterdam Vivaldi Players quickly gained a reputation for their virtuosic performances and their commitment to historical accuracy. They used period instruments and followed the performance practices of the Baroque era, which included improvisation and ornamentation. This approach was a departure from the more traditional interpretations of Baroque music that were popular at the time. One of the highlights of the Amsterdam Vivaldi Players' early career was their recording of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in 1990. This recording was praised for its energy and authenticity, and it helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading interpreters of Baroque music. Over the years, the Amsterdam Vivaldi Players have performed at major concert halls and festivals around the world. They have collaborated with many renowned musicians, including mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli and violinist Viktoria Mullova. They have also recorded numerous albums, many of which have received critical acclaim. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Amsterdam Vivaldi Players have also been recognized with several awards and honors. In 1995, they received the Dutch Edison Award for their recording of Vivaldi's "La Stravaganza." They have also been nominated for Grammy Awards and have received the Diapason d'Or, a prestigious French music award. The Amsterdam Vivaldi Players continue to be active today, with a core group of musicians that includes Remy Baudet, Pieter-Jan Belder, and Jaap ter Linden. They remain committed to their mission of bringing the music of the Baroque era to life with authenticity and passion.
