Manta Percussion Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that specializes in percussion instruments. The ensemble was founded in 2011 by four percussionists who shared a passion for exploring the possibilities of percussion music. The founding members of the ensemble were Matt Evans, Victor Caccese, Chris Graham, and Joe Bergen. The ensemble's name, Manta, is derived from the Spanish word for "blanket" or "cloak." The name was chosen to reflect the ensemble's desire to create a warm and enveloping sound that would transport listeners to new musical landscapes. Manta Percussion Ensemble has since grown to include additional members, including percussionists Lizzie Jones and Mike McCurdy. The ensemble is based in New York City and has performed at venues throughout the United States and internationally. One of the highlights of Manta Percussion Ensemble's career was their performance at the 2013 Bang on a Can Marathon in New York City. The Bang on a Can Marathon is an annual music festival that features a wide range of contemporary music, including classical, jazz, and experimental genres. Manta Percussion Ensemble's performance at the festival was well-received by both audiences and critics, and helped to establish the ensemble as a rising star in the world of contemporary classical music. In addition to their performance at the Bang on a Can Marathon, Manta Percussion Ensemble has also performed at other prestigious venues and festivals, including the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival, the Ecstatic Music Festival, and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention. Manta Percussion Ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades for their work. In 2014, the ensemble was awarded a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts to support their performances and educational outreach programs. The ensemble has also been featured in publications such as The New York Times, Time Out New York, and The Village Voice. One of the unique aspects of Manta Percussion Ensemble's work is their commitment to exploring new and innovative approaches to percussion music. The ensemble has collaborated with a wide range of composers and musicians, including electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick, composer and performer Caroline Shaw, and indie rock band Grizzly Bear. Manta Percussion Ensemble's repertoire includes both original compositions and arrangements of classical and contemporary works. The ensemble's performances often feature a wide range of percussion instruments, including marimbas, vibraphones, drums, and cymbals. Overall, Manta Percussion Ensemble is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is pushing the boundaries of classical music. With their unique sound and commitment to experimentation, the ensemble is sure to continue making waves in the world of contemporary classical music for years to come.More....
