He was born on June 17, 1925, in New York City, United States. From a young age, Thomas showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Thomas received his formal music education at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He studied under some of the most prominent music teachers of the time, including Rosina Lhévinne and Vladimir Horowitz. Thomas was a gifted pianist and quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent. In 1945, Thomas made his debut performance at Carnegie Hall, one of the most prestigious concert venues in the world. He received critical acclaim for his performance, and it marked the beginning of his successful career as a classical music artist. Over the years, Thomas performed at numerous concerts and recitals, both in the United States and abroad. One of the highlights of Thomas's career was his performance at the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. The competition was one of the most prestigious music competitions in the world, and Thomas was the first American pianist to participate.
