Role:EnsembleThe Pacific Baroque Orchestra (PBO) is a Canadian classical music ensemble that specializes in performing music from the Baroque era. The ensemble was founded in 1990 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for historically informed performance practices and a desire to bring this music to audiences in Vancouver and beyond. The founding members of the PBO included Marc Destrubé (violin), Michael Jarvis (harpsichord), and Kate Hammett-Vaughan (soprano). Over the years, the ensemble has grown to include a core group of musicians who perform regularly with the group, as well as guest artists who join them for specific performances. One of the highlights of the PBO's early years was their collaboration with the Vancouver Bach Choir on a performance of Bach's Mass in B Minor in 1992. This performance was widely praised for its authenticity and musicality, and helped to establish the PBO as a leading ensemble in the Vancouver classical music scene. Since then, the PBO has gone on to perform a wide range of repertoire from the Baroque era, including works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Telemann, among others. They have also collaborated with a number of other organizations and artists, including the Early Music Society of the Islands, the Victoria Symphony, and the Vancouver Opera. One of the PBO's most notable collaborations was with the renowned Canadian soprano Karina Gauvin, who joined them for a performance of Handel's opera Rodelinda in 2011. This performance was widely praised for its virtuosity and emotional depth, and helped to cement the PBO's reputation as one of Canada's leading classical music ensembles. In addition to their performances, the PBO has also been recognized for their recordings. Their 2013 album Handel: Apollo e Dafne was nominated for a Juno Award, which is Canada's highest honor for music. The album features performances of two of Handel's cantatas, and was praised for its "exquisite musicianship" and "impeccable taste." Overall, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra has established itself as one of Canada's leading classical music ensembles, known for their commitment to historically informed performance practices and their virtuosic musicianship. With a repertoire that spans the Baroque era and beyond, they continue to delight audiences with their performances and recordings.More....
