Moores Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Houston, Texas. The orchestra was founded in 1985 by David Tomatz, who served as its first conductor. The ensemble is composed of students from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, as well as community members. The Moores Symphony Orchestra has had several conductors over the years, including Franz Anton Krager, who served as music director from 1990 to 2019. Under Krager's leadership, the orchestra gained a reputation for excellence and performed a wide range of repertoire, from classical to contemporary works. One of the highlights of the Moores Symphony Orchestra's history was its performance at the 2009 Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio. The orchestra was selected to perform as part of the convention's showcase concert, which featured some of the best student ensembles from across the state. The Moores Symphony Orchestra's performance was well-received by the audience and helped to raise the ensemble's profile. In addition to its performance at the TMEA Convention, the Moores Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its excellence by other organizations. In 2011, the orchestra was awarded the American Prize in Orchestral Performance in the college/university division. The award recognized the ensemble's outstanding performances of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Shostakovich. Over the years, the Moores Symphony Orchestra has collaborated with a number of renowned soloists and conductors. In 2015, the orchestra performed with pianist Lang Lang as part of the Houston Symphony's Centennial Celebration. The concert, which was conducted by Krager, featured works by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Prokofiev. Another notable collaboration for the Moores Symphony Orchestra was its performance with conductor Leonard Slatkin in 2017. Slatkin, who is one of the most respected conductors in the world, led the orchestra in a program that included works by Bernstein, Barber, and Copland. In addition to its collaborations with guest artists, the Moores Symphony Orchestra has also premiered several new works over the years. In 2013, the orchestra premiered a new work by composer Pierre Jalbert, titled "In Aeternam." The piece, which was commissioned by the Moores School of Music, was well-received by audiences and critics alike. Overall, the Moores Symphony Orchestra has established itself as one of the premier student ensembles in the United States.
