Born on August 22, 1949, in New York City, Lebow grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Lebow started playing the cello at the age of nine and quickly showed exceptional talent. Lebow's early musical education was under the tutelage of Leonard Rose, a renowned cellist and teacher. He later studied at the Juilliard School of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree. He continued his studies at the Yale School of Music, where he received a Master of Music degree. Lebow's career as a professional cellist began in the early 1970s when he joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. He played with the orchestra for several years before leaving to pursue a career as a freelance musician. Lebow has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work as an orchestral musician, Lebow is also an accomplished chamber musician. He has performed with some of the world's most renowned chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet, the Guarneri String Quartet, and the Tokyo String Quartet. Lebow has also collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, and Joshua Bell. Lebow's contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1981, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise. He has also been awarded the Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Coleman Chamber Music Award. Lebow is also an accomplished music educator. He has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the University of Southern California, the Colburn School, and the California Institute of the Arts. He has also given masterclasses and workshops at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music.
