Born on August 22, 1954, in Washington, D.C., Colburn grew up in a family that valued music and the arts. His father was a professional musician, and his mother was a music teacher. Colburn's early exposure to music and his family's support helped him develop a passion for music that would shape his life and career. Colburn began his musical journey as a trumpet player, studying under the tutelage of his father. He attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance. After completing his undergraduate studies, Colburn continued his education at the University of Miami, where he earned a Master of Music degree in trumpet performance. During his time at the University of Miami, Colburn also studied conducting under the guidance of Frederick Fennell, a renowned conductor and music educator. After completing his graduate studies, Colburn began his professional career as a trumpet player, performing with various orchestras and ensembles. He also served as a faculty member at the University of Miami, where he taught trumpet and conducted the university's wind ensemble. In 1985, Colburn was appointed as the principal trumpet player of the United States Marine Band, also known as "The President's Own." He served in this position for 24 years, during which he performed at numerous high-profile events, including presidential inaugurations, state funerals, and concerts at the White House. In addition to his work as a trumpet player, Colburn also developed a reputation as a skilled conductor. He served as the conductor of the United States Marine Band from 2004 to 2014, leading the ensemble in performances across the United States and around the world. During his tenure as conductor, Colburn also oversaw the creation of the Marine Band's first-ever national concert tour, which brought the ensemble to audiences in 29 states. Colburn's achievements as a conductor have earned him numerous accolades and awards. In 2009, he was awarded the John Philip Sousa Foundation's Sudler Trophy, which is considered the highest honor for military bands in the United States.
