Born in Sudbury, Ontario, on August 22, 1973, Huhtanen grew up in a family of musicians. Her mother was a pianist, and her father was a choir director. From a young age, Huhtanen showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of five. Huhtanen's passion for music continued to grow, and she began singing in her father's choir at the age of eight. She quickly developed a love for choral music and began to explore other genres of classical music. Huhtanen's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. After completing high school, Huhtanen attended the University of Western Ontario, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance. She then went on to study at the University of Toronto, where she earned a Master of Music degree in vocal performance. Huhtanen's career as a professional musician began in 1998 when she joined the Canadian Opera Company's Ensemble Studio. During her time with the company, she performed in several productions, including "The Magic Flute," "La Bohème," and "The Marriage of Figaro." Her performances were well-received, and she quickly gained a reputation as a rising star in the world of classical music. In 2001, Huhtanen made her debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, performing in a production of "The Messiah." Her performance was a huge success, and she was invited to perform with the orchestra again in 2003 and 2005. Huhtanen's career continued to flourish, and she began to receive invitations to perform with other major orchestras and opera companies around the world. In 2006, she made her debut with the New York City Opera, performing in a production of "The Cunning Little Vixen." Huhtanen was also awarded the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Performance in an Opera in 2010 for her performance in "The Nightingale and Other Short Fables" with the Canadian Opera Company.
