However, it was not until he was 14 years old that he discovered his true passion for the organ. Engels began his formal music education at the Hochschule für Musik in Frankfurt, where he studied under the tutelage of Edgar Krapp. He later continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart, where he studied with Ludger Lohmann. Engels also spent time studying with renowned organists such as Marie-Claire Alain and Jean Guillou. Throughout his career, Engels has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. He has also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. One of Engels' most notable performances was his 2008 performance of Olivier Messiaen's "La Nativité du Seigneur" at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The performance was widely praised by critics, with the Los Angeles Times calling it "a stunning display of virtuosity and musicality." Engels has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1990, he won first prize at the International Organ Competition in Nuremberg, Germany.
