Role:EnsembleKammersveit Reykjavíkur, also known as the Reykjavik Chamber Orchestra, is a classical music ensemble based in Reykjavik, Iceland. The ensemble was founded in 1974 by a group of young musicians who were passionate about chamber music and wanted to create a platform for classical music in Iceland. The founding members of Kammersveit Reykjavíkur were violinists Guðmundur Óli Gunnarsson and Pétur Jónasson, violist Þórarinn Sigurbergsson, cellist Sigurður Halldórsson, and pianist Jónas Ingimundarson. The ensemble started with a core group of six musicians, but over the years, it has expanded to include up to 20 musicians for larger performances. Kammersveit Reykjavíkur has become one of Iceland's most prominent classical music ensembles, known for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. The ensemble has performed in various venues across Iceland, including the Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, and has also toured internationally, performing in countries such as Germany, Denmark, and the United States. One of the highlights of Kammersveit Reykjavíkur's career was its performance at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The ensemble was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the games, where they played a piece by Icelandic composer Jón Leifs. The performance was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world, and it helped to raise the profile of Kammersveit Reykjavíkur on the international stage. Over the years, Kammersveit Reykjavíkur has collaborated with many renowned musicians and conductors, including violinist Gidon Kremer, pianist Martha Argerich, and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy. The ensemble has also commissioned and premiered works by Icelandic composers such as Haukur Tómasson and Daníel Bjarnason. Kammersveit Reykjavíkur has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. In 1991, the ensemble won the Icelandic Music Award for Best Classical Album for its recording of Mozart's Piano Concertos Nos. 20 and 21 with pianist Peter Serkin. The ensemble has also been nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize, one of the most prestigious music awards in the Nordic countries. In addition to its performances and recordings, Kammersveit Reykjavíkur is also committed to music education and outreach. The ensemble regularly performs for school groups and participates in community events, and it has also established a chamber music festival in Reykjavik, which brings together musicians from Iceland and around the world. Today, Kammersveit Reykjavíkur continues to be a leading force in the Icelandic classical music scene. The ensemble's dedication to excellence and innovation has earned it a reputation as one of the most dynamic and exciting chamber music ensembles in the world.More....
