Artist Info

PUBLIQuartet is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2010 by four musicians who shared a passion for exploring the boundaries of classical music. The group is based in New York City and is known for its innovative programming, which combines classical music with other genres such as jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music. The founding members of PUBLIQuartet are Curtis Stewart (violin), Jannina Norpoth (violin), Nick Revel (viola), and Amanda Gookin (cello). All four musicians are classically trained and have performed with some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles. However, they were drawn together by a desire to create something new and different in the classical music world. From the beginning, PUBLIQuartet has been committed to breaking down the barriers between different genres of music and exploring the connections between them. The group's name reflects this mission, as it is a play on the words "public" and "quartet." The group believes that classical music should be accessible to everyone, and they strive to make their performances engaging and inclusive. One of the highlights of PUBLIQuartet's early career was their residency at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. From 2013 to 2015, the group performed a series of concerts at the museum, exploring the connections between music and art. They also collaborated with visual artists to create multimedia performances that combined music and visual art. In 2015, PUBLIQuartet released their debut album, "Freedom and Faith," which featured works by composers such as Jessie Montgomery, Judd Greenstein, and Caroline Shaw. The album was well-received by critics and helped to establish the group as one of the most innovative and exciting ensembles in the classical music world. Since then, PUBLIQuartet has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, collaborating with artists from a wide range of genres and performing in venues ranging from concert halls to nightclubs. They have also been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award and the Chamber Music America Visionary Award. One of the group's most notable recent performances was their collaboration with rapper and producer Q-Tip at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In this performance, PUBLIQuartet and Q-Tip explored the connections between classical music and hip-hop, creating a unique and powerful fusion of the two genres. Another highlight of PUBLIQuartet's career was their performance at the 2019 Newport Jazz Festival. In this performance, the group collaborated with jazz pianist and composer Vijay Iyer, creating a dynamic and innovative fusion of classical music and jazz. Throughout their career, PUBLIQuartet has remained committed to their mission of breaking down the barriers between different genres of music and making classical music accessible to everyone. They continue to push the boundaries of classical music and collaborate with artists from a wide range of genres, creating innovative and exciting performances that are unlike anything else in the classical music world.
