The Orchestra dell'Opera di Parma is a classical music ensemble based in Parma, Italy. The orchestra was founded in 1861 as the Orchestra del Teatro Regio di Parma, and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Italy. The orchestra's founding can be traced back to the opening of the Teatro Regio di Parma in 1829. The theater was built to showcase the works of Giuseppe Verdi, who was born in the nearby town of Busseto. The orchestra was initially made up of local musicians, but soon attracted some of the best musicians from around Italy. Over the years, the orchestra has had many notable members, including conductor Arturo Toscanini, who served as the orchestra's music director from 1914 to 1915. Other notable conductors who have worked with the orchestra include Riccardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, and Herbert von Karajan. The Orchestra dell'Opera di Parma has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. The orchestra has also performed at many of the world's most renowned music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Ravenna Festival. One of the orchestra's most notable performances was its 2013 production of Verdi's "Aida" at the Teatro Regio di Parma. The production was directed by Franco Zeffirelli and featured a star-studded cast, including soprano Maria Guleghina and tenor Fabio Armiliato. The production was widely praised for its stunning visuals and powerful performances. The Orchestra dell'Opera di Parma has also received many awards and accolades over the years. In 2011, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious Premio Abbiati, which is given annually by the Italian music critics' association to the best Italian orchestra.
