James Stagliano was born on May 12, 1985, in New York City. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Stagliano showed a natural talent for music, and he began playing the piano at the age of four. Stagliano's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue music seriously. He began taking piano lessons with his father and quickly progressed, winning his first competition at the age of six. Stagliano continued to study with his father until he was accepted into the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division at the age of 12. At Juilliard, Stagliano studied with renowned pianist Yoheved Kaplinsky. He quickly established himself as a prodigious talent, winning numerous competitions and awards. In 2001, at the age of 16, Stagliano won the prestigious Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, becoming the youngest winner in the competition's history. Stagliano's success at the Bachauer Competition led to numerous performance opportunities. He made his debut with the Utah Symphony Orchestra in 2002, performing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and Stagliano was praised for his technical skill and musicality. Over the next few years, Stagliano continued to perform with orchestras around the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also began to establish himself as a solo recitalist, performing at major venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. In 2006, Stagliano released his debut album, featuring works by Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. The album was well-received by critics and helped to establish Stagliano as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Stagliano's career continued to flourish in the following years. He won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009, cementing his status as one of the world's top pianists. He also began to explore new repertoire, performing works by contemporary composers such as John Adams and Philip Glass. In addition to his performing career, Stagliano is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, and he currently serves as a professor of piano at the University of Michigan. Throughout his career, Stagliano has received numerous awards and honors. In addition to his wins at the Bachauer and Cliburn Competitions, he has been awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Gilmore Young Artist Award. He has also been named a Steinway Artist, an honor reserved for the world's top pianists. Despite his many accomplishments, Stagliano remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and teach, always striving to improve and push the boundaries of what is possible on the piano.
