Born on August 20, 1956, in Adelaide, South Australia, Selby showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Her parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Selby's early musical education was under the guidance of her mother, who was a piano teacher. She later studied at the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree with First Class Honours. She then went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she received a Master of Music degree. Selby's career as a professional pianist began in the early 1980s when she won the ABC Instrumental and Vocal Competition. This win led to her performing with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. She also performed as a soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. In 1986, Selby founded the Selby & Friends chamber music series, which has become one of Australia's most successful and respected chamber music series. The series features Selby performing with some of the world's most renowned musicians, including violinist Niki Vasilakis, cellist Timo-Veikko Valve, and clarinetist Catherine McCorkill. Selby has also performed extensively overseas, including in the United States, Europe, and Asia. She has performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and the Wigmore Hall in London. Selby has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 1997, she was awarded the Order of Australia for her services to music. She has also been awarded the Centenary Medal and the Australian Music Centre's award for services to Australian music. One of Selby's most notable performances was in 2014 when she performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. The performance was highly praised by critics, with one reviewer describing Selby's playing as "exquisite and nuanced."
