The choir is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and has a rich history of performances and awards. The Birth of Singing City Choirs Elaine Brown, a music educator and conductor, founded Singing City Choirs in 1948. Brown was passionate about choral music and believed that it had the power to bring people together. She wanted to create a choir that would be open to anyone who loved to sing, regardless of their musical background or experience. Brown's vision for Singing City Choirs was to create a community of singers who would come together to perform choral music at the highest level. She believed that choral music had the power to inspire and uplift people, and she wanted to share that experience with as many people as possible. The Growth of Singing City Choirs Over the years, Singing City Choirs has grown from a small community choir to a world-renowned choral group. The choir has performed in some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. Singing City Choirs has also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and composers in the world. In 1964, the choir performed under the direction of Leonard Bernstein in a performance of his "Chichester Psalms" at the Philadelphia Academy of Music. The choir has also worked with other notable conductors, including Robert Shaw, Eugene Ormandy, and Zubin Mehta. Highlights of Major Performances Singing City Choirs has had many highlights over the years, but some of the most notable performances include: - In 1957, Singing City Choirs performed at the inauguration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The choir performed "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "America the Beautiful" in front of a crowd of over 20,000 people. - In 1962, Singing City Choirs performed at the opening of the Philadelphia Orchestra's season. The choir performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony under the direction of Eugene Ormandy. - In 1984, Singing City Choirs performed at the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco. The choir performed "America the Beautiful" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" in front of a national audience. - In 1994, Singing City Choirs performed at the opening of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia. The choir performed a program of choral music that included works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart. Awards and Recognition Singing City Choirs has received numerous awards and recognition over the years. In 1965, the choir was awarded the prestigious Sudler Trophy, which is given to the top community band or choir in the United States. Singing City Choirs was the first choir to receive this award.
