Gunnar grew up in a musical family and was exposed to music from a young age. He began playing the piano at the age of six and later learned to play the violin and cello. Gunnar studied music at the Oslo Conservatory of Music and later at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany. He also studied with the famous violinist and composer, Eugène Ysaÿe, in Brussels. Gunnar retired from the Oslo Philharmonic in 1945 but continued to perform and teach until his death in 1960. He was widely regarded as one of Norway's greatest violinists and a key figure in the development of classical music in Norway. In recognition of his contributions to music, Gunnar was awarded several honors and awards. He was made a Knight of the Order of St. Olav in 1939 and was awarded the King's Medal of Merit in gold in 1951.
