Uno Helmersson was a Swedish composer and musician who was born on May 22, 1955, in Stockholm, Sweden. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. Helmersson started playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. Helmersson studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he received a degree in composition. He also studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, where he further honed his skills as a composer. During his studies, Helmersson was influenced by the works of classical composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart, as well as contemporary composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass. After completing his studies, Helmersson began his career as a composer and musician. He worked on a variety of projects, including film scores, theater productions, and dance performances. He also collaborated with other musicians and artists, including the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Swedish Ballet. One of Helmersson's most notable works is his opera "The Journey," which premiered in 1990. The opera tells the story of a man who embarks on a journey to find his true self and features a mix of classical and contemporary music. The opera was well-received by audiences and critics alike and helped establish Helmersson as a prominent composer in Sweden. Helmersson also composed several pieces for orchestra, including "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra" and "Concerto for Violin and Orchestra." These works showcase Helmersson's ability to blend classical and contemporary styles, with elements of jazz and rock music also present in his compositions. In addition to his work as a composer, Helmersson was also a skilled pianist and performed his own works in concerts and recitals. He was known for his improvisational skills and often incorporated improvisation into his performances. Throughout his career, Helmersson received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. In 1993, he was awarded the Swedish Society of Composers' prize for his opera "The Journey." He was also a recipient of the Swedish Arts Grants Committee's working grant and the Swedish Music Publishers Association's prize for best orchestral work. Sadly, Helmersson passed away on December 9, 2016, at the age of 61. However, his legacy as a composer and musician lives on through his works, which continue to be performed and celebrated by audiences around the world.
