FranceBirth:November 9, 1821 in Guebwiller, FranceDeath:May 20, 1910 in TrottbergJean-Baptiste Wekerlin was a French composer and music educator who lived from 1821 to 1862. He was born in Paris, France, and showed an early interest in music. His father was a music teacher, and Wekerlin began studying music at a young age. He studied piano, violin, and singing, and showed a particular talent for composition. Wekerlin's early musical education was focused on classical music, and he was heavily influenced by the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn. He also studied the works of French composers such as Berlioz and Gounod. Wekerlin's early compositions were primarily for piano, and he wrote a number of pieces for his own use as a performer. In 1842, Wekerlin began working as a music teacher at the École Normale de Musique de Paris. He quickly gained a reputation as an excellent teacher, and his students included some of the most talented young musicians in France. Wekerlin was known for his strict but supportive teaching style, and he was highly respected by his students. In addition to his work as a teacher, Wekerlin continued to compose music throughout his career. He wrote a number of operas, including Les Trois Souhaits and Le Roi Carotte, which were well-received by audiences and critics alike. He also wrote a number of choral works, including the popular song "La Chanson des Lavandières," which is still performed today. One of Wekerlin's most significant contributions to music was his work as an editor and arranger. He was responsible for editing and arranging a number of important works by other composers, including Mozart's Requiem and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Wekerlin's editions of these works were highly regarded for their accuracy and attention to detail. Despite his many accomplishments, Wekerlin's life was cut short by illness. He died in 1862 at the age of 41. However, his legacy as a composer, teacher, and editor lives on. His works continue to be performed and studied by musicians around the world, and his contributions to the world of classical music are still recognized and celebrated today.More....
