Jocelyn Dueck is a Canadian classical pianist who has gained international recognition for her virtuosic performances and insightful interpretations of a wide range of repertoire. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1981, Dueck began playing the piano at the age of four and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She studied with several renowned teachers in Canada and the United States, including Jane Coop, Menahem Pressler, and Leon Fleisher. Dueck's early career was marked by a series of impressive accomplishments. In 1997, she won the Canadian Music Competition and was awarded the prestigious Sylva Gelber Foundation Award, which recognizes outstanding young Canadian musicians. She went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree and was awarded the prestigious Rachmaninoff Prize for outstanding achievement in piano performance. After completing her studies at Curtis, Dueck embarked on a busy concert career, performing extensively throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. She has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also given recitals at major venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Wigmore Hall. Dueck's repertoire is wide-ranging and includes works by composers from the Baroque era to the present day. She has a particular affinity for the music of J.S. Bach, and has performed his complete keyboard works in a series of recitals. She has also championed the music of contemporary composers, and has premiered works by such composers as John Harbison, George Tsontakis, and Michael Torke. Dueck's performances have been praised for their technical brilliance, musical sensitivity, and deep understanding of the music. Critics have noted her ability to bring out the emotional depth and complexity of the music, and her ability to communicate with audiences on a profound level. She has been described as a "pianist of rare distinction" (The Philadelphia Inquirer) and a "musician of great depth and insight" (The Toronto Star). In addition to her performing career, Dueck is also an active educator. She has taught at several institutions, including the University of British Columbia, the University of Toronto, and the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music. She is also a sought-after masterclass teacher and has given masterclasses at many institutions around the world. Dueck's many accomplishments have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In addition to the Sylva Gelber Foundation Award and the Rachmaninoff Prize, she has been awarded the Canada Council for the Arts' Career Development Grant, the Virginia Parker Prize, and the William Kapell International Piano Competition Prize. She has also been a finalist in several major international piano competitions, including the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and the Leeds International Piano Competition. Despite her many achievements, Dueck remains committed to her art and to the pursuit of musical excellence. She continues to perform and teach, and to inspire audiences and students with her passion for music.
