Born on December 12, 1973, in Seoul, South Korea, Lee showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Lee's musical journey began at the Yewon School, a prestigious music school in Seoul, where he studied under the guidance of Professor Choong-Mo Kang. He later attended the Seoul Arts High School, where he continued to hone his skills as a pianist. In 1992, Lee moved to the United States to further his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City. At Juilliard, Lee studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist Yoheved Kaplinsky. He also had the opportunity to work with other distinguished musicians, including Emanuel Ax, Murray Perahia, and Jerome Lowenthal. Lee's talent and hard work paid off, and he graduated from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1996. After completing his studies, Lee embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist. He has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center. He has also performed with many renowned orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. One of Lee's most notable performances was his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 2001. He performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 under the baton of conductor Kurt Masur. The performance was a huge success, and Lee received critical acclaim for his virtuosic playing. Lee has also won numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1995, he won the Juilliard School's Gina Bachauer Piano Competition, which helped launch his career as a concert pianist. He has also won the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra's Young Artist Competition and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. In addition to his career as a concert pianist, Lee is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Seoul National University. He is currently a professor of piano at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Lee's repertoire is vast and includes works by many of the great composers, including Beethoven, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. He is particularly known for his interpretations of the music of Franz Liszt, and has recorded several albums of Liszt's music. In 2018, Lee released a critically acclaimed album titled "Liszt: The Complete Piano Music, Vol. 53." The album features some of Liszt's most challenging and virtuosic works, including the Sonata in B minor and the Mephisto Waltz No. 1. The album showcases Lee's technical prowess and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of Liszt's music. Throughout his career, Lee has remained committed to promoting classical music and inspiring the next generation of musicians. He has given masterclasses and workshops around the world, and has served as a judge for many international piano competitions. In recognition of his contributions to the world of music, Lee has received numerous awards and honors.
