Ensemble Peregrina is a classical music ensemble that specializes in medieval and early music. The ensemble was founded in 1997 by Agnieszka Budzińska-Bennett, a Polish-born musician who studied musicology and medieval music at the University of Warsaw and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland. Budzińska-Bennett had a vision of creating an ensemble that would explore the rich and diverse repertoire of medieval and early music, and bring it to audiences around the world. She assembled a group of talented musicians who shared her passion for this music, and together they formed Ensemble Peregrina. The ensemble's name, Peregrina, means "pilgrim" in Latin, and reflects the group's commitment to exploring the musical traditions of different cultures and time periods. The ensemble's repertoire includes music from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque, as well as traditional music from Poland and other countries. Ensemble Peregrina's main members include Agnieszka Budzińska-Bennett (voice, harp, percussion), Hanna Marti (voice, fiddle), and Hanna Kłosowska (voice, recorder, percussion). The ensemble also collaborates with other musicians and ensembles, depending on the repertoire and performance venue. Over the years, Ensemble Peregrina has performed at major music festivals and concert halls around the world, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Festival Oude Muziek in Utrecht, the Tage Alter Musik in Regensburg, and the Boston Early Music Festival. The ensemble has also recorded several albums, including "Music from the Time of Queen Jadwiga" (2002), "Music from the Court of King Sigismund III" (2005), and "Music from the Time of Marco Polo" (2010). One of the highlights of Ensemble Peregrina's career was their performance at the 2009 Early Music Festival in Bruges, Belgium. The ensemble presented a program of music from the Codex Las Huelgas, a medieval manuscript from Spain that contains some of the most beautiful and complex polyphonic music of the 13th century. The performance was praised by critics and audiences alike for its virtuosity, sensitivity, and historical authenticity. Another notable performance by Ensemble Peregrina was their collaboration with the Polish Radio Choir in 2014. The two ensembles presented a program of Polish and European music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, including works by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, and Tomás Luis de Victoria. The concert was broadcast live on Polish radio and received widespread acclaim for its musical excellence and cultural significance. Ensemble Peregrina has also received numerous awards and honors for their contributions to the field of early music. In 2003, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious "Prix de la Fondation Royaumont" in France, which recognizes outstanding young ensembles in the field of early music. In 2007, Ensemble Peregrina was awarded the "Gloria Artis" medal by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, in recognition of their artistic achievements and contributions to Polish culture. In addition to their performances and recordings, Ensemble Peregrina is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly conducts workshops and masterclasses for students and amateur musicians, and has collaborated with schools and community organizations to promote the appreciation and understanding of early music.
