The Mostar Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in the city of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The orchestra was founded in 1992, during the height of the Bosnian War, by a group of musicians who were determined to keep the tradition of classical music alive in their war-torn country. The founding members of the orchestra were a diverse group of musicians, including both Bosniak and Croat performers. Despite the ethnic tensions that were tearing their country apart, these musicians were united by their love of music and their belief in its power to bring people together. In the early years of its existence, the Mostar Symphony Orchestra faced many challenges. The war had left the city of Mostar in ruins, and the orchestra struggled to find a suitable venue for its performances. Nevertheless, the musicians persevered, and over time they began to build a reputation as one of the finest classical music ensembles in the region. One of the highlights of the orchestra's early years was its performance at the 1994 Sarajevo Winter Olympics. The orchestra played a selection of classical pieces to an international audience, showcasing the resilience and determination of the Bosnian people in the face of adversity. Over the years, the Mostar Symphony Orchestra has continued to grow and evolve. Today, it is a full-fledged professional orchestra with a roster of over 50 musicians. The orchestra performs a wide range of classical music, from Baroque and Classical-era works to contemporary compositions. One of the hallmarks of the Mostar Symphony Orchestra is its commitment to promoting Bosnian and Herzegovinian composers. The orchestra has commissioned and premiered works by a number of local composers, including Dino Zonic, Zoran Jurkovic, and Zoran Simjanovic. In addition to its work in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Mostar Symphony Orchestra has also performed internationally. The orchestra has toured throughout Europe, as well as in the United States and Canada. Some of the orchestra's most notable performances include concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The Mostar Symphony Orchestra has also been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2003, the orchestra was awarded the prestigious European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Award for its work in preserving and promoting classical music in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2012, the orchestra was awarded the City of Mostar Award for its contributions to the cultural life of the city. The award recognized the orchestra's role in promoting cultural diversity and understanding in a city that had been torn apart by ethnic conflict. Today, the Mostar Symphony Orchestra continues to be a vital part of the cultural landscape of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The orchestra's commitment to promoting local composers and showcasing the best of classical music from around the world has made it a beloved institution in the country and beyond.
